Raising awareness about issues related to domestic & dating violence

Hotline Advocate volunteer training starts September 7! July 18, 2010

Like many other non-profits, FVPC relies a great deal on volunteer support.  Volunteers allow us to offer a variety of free services to the public including: 24-hour confidential hotline, support groups with childcare for moms in need, crisis counseling, court advocacy, Spanish language interpretation, community education, special events and much more.  We’re a small agency with only 4 full-time and 3 part-time staff so we rely on volunteers and interns to help cover the work that our community needs.  Twice a year, in the spring and fall, we offer a free 48-hour volunteer training for those interested in client work and a 24-hour training for folks who prefer community education (non-direct client service).

A few more details on client work volunteer opps:

  • We need *daytime* advocates in our office Monday – Friday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm or 1:00 to 5:00 pm. Daytime advocates meet with walk-in clients to provide counseling or assistance i.e. helping a client fill out a domestic violence protection order. And— *overnight* advocates who carry a cell phone to respond to hotline calls during non-office hours (evenings and weekends).  Using active listening and crisis intervention skills, advocates provide emotional support and informational resources (legal, medical, mental health and shelter options) to victims of domestic violence, their friends and family members.

Our next volunteer training session for those interested in client work starts *Tuesday September 7 and runs through Tuesday October 5*. The 48-hour training includes both classroom and real time “shadowing” training.   The community education training starts September 7 and runs for 24 hours.   Prior to training, a completed application and interview is required. There is no fee for the training but we ask for a 9-month commitment to FVPC upon successful completion. Note: A special need exists for bilingual (Spanish/English) volunteers.

Questions?  Email me at vccoordinator (at) fvpcoc.org.  If you are interested in volunteering but worried about fitting training into your schedule please call and we can discuss options for your volunteer training! Ready to start?  Click here to download our volunteer application.

PS. We also have time-limited volunteer opportunities which don’t involve client work.  If you’re interested in something more short-term, please still fill out our volunteer application and we’ll be in touch!  Thanks.
